Last day of term for many recruiters!

You know what it’s like, you’ve worked your butt off all year and suddenly you’ve realised you still have vacation days remaining. A perfect time to use them up and enjoy the festivities…like seeing the ‘Coke’ truck! It’s also a perfect time if you’re remaining in the office to reflect on what has worked well this year and then what you’d like to achieve in 2016.

What should you have achieved in 2015?

According to data released by the REC and KPMG in the UK, demand for permanent staff was up +6% while temp vacancies were up +2%. How did your results stack up against that? Hopefully you’re celebrating a performance that equals or betters that.

Twitter was tipped to be one of the growing beneficial tools for recruiters this year. But did you benefit? From what I’ve seen, those who have embraced it for communicating their thought leadership and general networking have seen a huge increase in their following and subsequently a bigger audience when they do want to be heard, but as a direct sourcing tool it is far from perfect.

What are the continual challenges?

Winning the war for talent has got to be one of the biggest issues facing recruiters. Everyone I have talked to mentions their continual fight to attract and manage good candidates. So are you working hard at understanding your clients Employee Value Proposition so you can market them well? Are you negotiating a fillable job based upon your knowledge of available talent? And are you expanding your knowledge of different search techniques to help you look beyond just LinkedIn? I’ve seen some stunning results for individuals this year who have taken my advice and looked beyond the norm.

How are you ‘reaching out’?

Apparently, as recruiters we love to say ‘reach out and connect with you’, so just how are you doing it most effectively? As our candidates get more tech savvy are we keeping up? I continue to see numerous recruiters believing they can send InMails and great candidates will eagerly respond, but I don’t see many who are able to tell me their success rates with it! Video screening has grown massively this year and even I am embracing this media for training videos (coming very soon by the way!). I recently instructed a raw graduate to make headhunt calls to a global pool of candidates they had sourced and as a result they managed to gain commitment from a healthy number of talented people for their ‘difficult to fill’ jobs. So sometimes, despite all of the technology, the old methods do still work, if you know how!

In summary

Take the next few weeks to have a really good rest; the chances are you’ve earnt it! But also reflect on what went well this year and what you’d like to do even better in 2016. Think about how you can sharpen up your techniques and maybe even use a few ‘traditional’ ones too! If I can support you with developing you or your team in 2016, do let me know. And look out for my videos which will be published soon.

A very merry Christmas and best wishes for a prosperous new year from all at Fully Engaged
